according to the Hype Machine, Lykke Li is one of the most blogged-about artists right now, no doubt in large part due to this week’s American-market release of her full-length album Youth Novels, but that’s just a catalyst. fact is she’s got something good going on and folks have been waiting on this record since her MySpace beginnings and hit single Little Bit. all i can say really is that she’s from Sweden. SWEDEN! guh.

She & Him ~ I Should Have Known Better August 22, 2008

there appears to be two kinds of people in the world of She & Him fans. She fans and Him fans.

i don’t know that i’ve ever seen Zooey Deschanel act in anything. possibly i caught her in the one episode of the Simpsons that she was in. in fact i came onto She & Him via Matt Ward who i’ve been a fan of for some years. as it happens, in comparison to his own records, he takes a step away from centre on She & Him’s debut Volume One, released last spring. Deschanel is at the front of these songs, and M. Ward gives us the occasional backup vocals, and always hot guitar. it’s a great record, with a real authenticity to the sound which is rooted in mid-century American pop records.

This song is a Beatles cover which by virtue of the duet has a real sweetness that the fab four never achieved.. and which, with the rest of Volume One, has made me a She fan and a Him fan.

Ortiz at Summer Music Conference 2008 July 23, 2008

  Toronto based dubtech artist Ortiz (a.k.a. Laurier Brown) is performing as part of the SMC2008 “Sonic Earth Festival” on Thursday, July 24th (10pm) at Octapus Lounge (293 Palmerston - South of College). For a while now, Ortiz has been putting out his brand of dubbed out sounds around town to make you get down and turn a frown upside down. His tracks have been featured in the pages (web or otherwise) of Vague Terrain, and his live shows are a must see.

 Also on the bill for this night of down-tempo beats and “conscious hip-hop” are live performances from Candy Coated Killers and Elle Be MC.

Fuck Yeah! Super Fantastic Fridays Celebrating the 4th of July June 26, 2008

Of course we are all thinking about Canada Day, but let’s not forget that our friends to the south have their very own special day next week.

And as inhabitants of the 51st state, we would be just a little bit lax if we didn’t take the time to gas up the Hummers, stock up the bomb shelters and freak the heck out, orange alert style.

In honor of the 4th of July, Superfantastic Industries is pleased to present our musical tribute to kicking ass and chewing gum…and as the old saying goes, we’re running a little low on gum.
